The Ranchi Rhinos finally played like the team they look like on paper to beat the UP Wizards 3-1 in the Hockey India League today. Ten minutes into the second quarter, Ranchi converted their domination into a goal with captain Mo Fuerste of Germany deftly deflecting a hit from the center of the field from India’s Birendra Lakra.
The Wizards came back in the third quarter when Donald slammed home a penalty corner in the very last minute of the that quarter to make it one each. The fourth quarter, however, produced one of the best goals of the tournament, as Blackstick Nick Wilson collected a pass from a free hit at the top of the circle, dribbled past two Wizard defenders and scored through a brilliant tomahawk strike to make it 2-1. And the reliable Ashley Jackson of England made it 3-1 after he converted a penalty stroke in the last minute of the game.
This was the Wizards’ first defeat, having remained unbeaten in their first four matches.
