The US field hockey team lost 2-0 in a penalty shootout to Scotland after the game went to penalties with the full time score tied at 1-1. The five women taking the penalty shootout for the US were O’Donnell, Kasold, Falgowski, Crandall, Gonzalez, and none of them scored. Albini had scored for the US in the 14th minute to give her country a 1-0 lead, but Kintzer scored for Scotland in the 49th minute to bring the score back to parity.
The Americans were favorites in this game against 19th ranked Scotland, but may now have a harder time finishing top of the table. As the No. 10 ranked team in the world, the U.S. received an automatic entry into World League Round 2 and is considered the favorites here in Rio to advance. The top two teams from World League Round 2 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil will automatically move on to World League Round 3 and become one step closer to qualifying for the 2014 World Cup.
The six team round robin tournament features No. 18 Chile, No. 19 Scotland, No. 27 Trinidad & Tobago, No. 50 Uruguay and No. 55 Brazil. Team USA beat host nation Brazil in the opening match on March 4, and also recorded a 3-0 win over Uruguay. The USA plays Chile next before closing out the tournament against Trinidad and Tobago on March 10.
